What does 170,000L of Water look like?

As you are on this site that means you have probably seen that each of Ortho Clinical Diagnostics VITROS® Analyzers saves when compared to competitor systems approximately 170,000L of purified water per year per analyzer. That sounds like a lot but this article will help add a bit more perspective to what 170,000L of water really looks like.

Number 1, We did know that water is used in the manufacture of paper, as pretty much used in everything, but we didn’t realize how much. To create 1 sheet of A4 paper it takes 10L of water, so each year a VITROS® saves enough water to make 17,000 sheets of A4 paper, that equates to about 80m if you stack the paper!!!

Number 2, the average national water consumption in the UK is 150 litres per person day (for drinking, washing, flushing the toilet, showering, dishwashers and washing machines) so 170,000 litres represents one person’s water consumption for nearly three years.

Number 3, The average American drinks 263 litres of water per year so 170,000 litres represents 646 years’ worth of drinking water.

Number 4, The average 5-minute shower uses 35 litres of water so 170,000 litres represents 4,857 showers – assuming one shower per day that’s almost 13 years of showers.

Number 5, One litre is 1.75 pints so 170,000 litres is the equivalent of 297,500 pints of beer.

Number 6, The average annual rainfall in the UK is 594 litres of rain falling per square metre of ground, so 170,000 litres represents 285 years’ worth of rain falling on one square metre.

How much this saving represents financially varies from region to region as different water authorities charge different amounts.

And of course, it’s not just about the water-saving. There are also substantial savings to be had in terms of CO2 emissions, as the energy needed to process water to make it fit for use is substantial. Saving 170,000 litres of water equates to a carbon reduction of 29.75 kg, so switching to Ortho’s waterless VITROS® Analyzers will significantly reduce your organization’s carbon footprint.
